With their first ACC series just a week away, NC State resisted the temptation to look ahead and instead went about the business of handling Quinnipiac last weekend at Doak Field. The Pack improved their record to 10-1 on the season, as they cruised behind solid starting pitching and a hot offense. State posted 48 runs over the weekend as they scored early and often against the Bobcats (0-3). Quinnipiac actually took a 2-run lead in the first inning of Friday's opener, but it was short-lived as State exploded for 12 runs in their first two at-bats. Rob Chamra (3-0, 0.00) earned the win in relief of Ethan Ogburn, and Chris Schaeffer led the offensive onslaught with a 4-5 night including a homer and 3 RBI's. Drew Poulk blasted a grand slam and Bill Edwards went deep over the wall in left. Kyle Wilson was 2-2 with 3 RBI's, and Russell Wilson was 2-3 with an RBI. Jake Buchanan (2-1, 1.77) was in complete control on Saturday as he threw six shutout innings to pick up the win. Buchanan struck out 7 with no walks and allowed just 4 hits in the outing. Dallas Poulk was the offensive leader, as the senior went 2-4 with his 3rd homer of the season and 3 RBI's. Danny Canela drilled his 2nd homer of the year and drove in 3 runs. Perhaps the most important thing that happened on Saturday though was the long-awaited return of Alex Sogard and John Lambert to the mound, as each of the big lefties threw a successful inning out of the bullpen. Sunday's finale saw the Pack pile up 17 runs on 17 hits as they completed the sweep of the Bobcats. Dallas Poulk was 3-4 with 3 RBI's and Drew Poulk was 3-6 with 4 RBI's. Danny Canela was 1-4 with 2 RBI's, Russell Wilson was 2-5 with a homer and a triple, and Harold Riggins was 2-2 with 2 RBI's. Grant Sasser (2-0, 1.17) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Next up for State is a home game at 3:00pm on Tuesday against NC A&T (3-6), followed by a road trip to #9 Clemson (9-1) this weekend for the first conference series of the season. Game times at Doug Kingsmore Stadium are scheduled for Friday at 4:00pm, Saturday at 2:00pm, and Sunday at 1:00pm. North Carolina A&T Aggies baseball Clemson Tigers baseball |
| The Wolfpack rebounded quickly from their first loss of the season with a 10-7 win over the visiting Xavier Musketeers at Doak Field on Thursday afternoon. NC State (7-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and was cruising behind starter Cory Mazzoni (2-0, 2.16), who retired 14 of the first 18 hitters he faced. With two outs in the top of the 5th inning though, Xavier's Bobby Freking launched a 3-run homer to left to knot the score. State answered quickly with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Bergquist scored on Dallas Poulk's sacrifice fly, and then Andrew Ciencin singled home Kyle Wilson who had doubled earlier in the inning. State added to their lead in the 7th when Ciencin led off with a double and then scored on Pratt Maynard's booming triple off the wall in left center. Finally, in the bottom of the 8th with the bases loaded, Ciencin insured that Xavier reliever Alex Vice's second pitch of the game would be his last by crushing it over the wall in deep left center for a grand slam home run to make the score 10-3 in favor of State. Vance Williams relieved Mazzoni with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the top of the 6th inning and struck out the first hitter he faced to end the threat. Williams then retired 7 of the next 8 hitters he faced in an impressive outing from the bullpen. After retiring Xavier's leadoff hitter in the top of the 9th inning, Williams was relieved by Nate King who struck out the first batter he faced to bring State to within one out of the win. The Musketeers weren't throwing in the towel though as they rapped three consecutive singles to load the bases, and then scored when a walk forced in a run. The next hitter doubled to clear the bases and suddenly the score was 10-7. However, King induced a flyball to right from the next hitter and Drew Poulk made the catch to give the Pack their 7th win of the young season. |
