With their first ACC series just a week away, NC State resisted the temptation to look ahead and instead went about the business of handling Quinnipiac last weekend at Doak Field. The Pack improved their record to 10-1 on the season, as they cruised behind solid starting pitching and a hot offense. State posted 48 runs over the weekend as they scored early and often against the Bobcats (0-3). Quinnipiac actually took a 2-run lead in the first inning of Friday's opener, but it was short-lived as State exploded for 12 runs in their first two at-bats. Rob Chamra (3-0, 0.00) earned the win in relief of Ethan Ogburn, and Chris Schaeffer led the offensive onslaught with a 4-5 night including a homer and 3 RBI's. Drew Poulk blasted a grand slam and Bill Edwards went deep over the wall in left. Kyle Wilson was 2-2 with 3 RBI's, and Russell Wilson was 2-3 with an RBI. Jake Buchanan (2-1, 1.77) was in complete control on Saturday as he threw six shutout innings to pick up the win. Buchanan struck out 7 with no walks and allowed just 4 hits in the outing. Dallas Poulk was the offensive leader, as the senior went 2-4 with his 3rd homer of the season and 3 RBI's. Danny Canela drilled his 2nd homer of the year and drove in 3 runs. Perhaps the most important thing that happened on Saturday though was the long-awaited return of Alex Sogard and John Lambert to the mound, as each of the big lefties threw a successful inning out of the bullpen. Sunday's finale saw the Pack pile up 17 runs on 17 hits as they completed the sweep of the Bobcats. Dallas Poulk was 3-4 with 3 RBI's and Drew Poulk was 3-6 with 4 RBI's. Danny Canela was 1-4 with 2 RBI's, Russell Wilson was 2-5 with a homer and a triple, and Harold Riggins was 2-2 with 2 RBI's. Grant Sasser (2-0, 1.17) picked up the win out of the bullpen. |
In their last contest before beginning conference play, the Wolfpack (11-1) outslugged a game squad from North Carolina A&T (3-7) in front of the home crowd at Doak Field. Although the Pack - now ranked #28 by Collegiate Baseball - only batted in eight innings, they still rapped out 18 hits to win by a final score of 14-10. The Aggies jumped out to an early lead on a 2-run homer by Lester Rivenbank in the top of the 2nd, but State's Pratt Maynard answered with a 2-run bomb of his own over the wall in deep center in the bottom of the frame. Harold Riggins added his first homer of the season and the Pack led 6-2 after the 4th. After stretching the lead to 7-2 though, State saw the Aggies scrap back and take an 8-7 lead in the top of the 7th inning. State answered quickly again though with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning, and then Chris Diaz's 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th capped the scoring for the home team. With the Clemson series looming, State threw Johnny Wholestaff at A&T as Danny Healey, Vance Williams, Rob Chamra, John Lambert, Chris Overman, Nate King, Anthony Tzamtzis, and Russell Wilson all took a turn on the hill. Williams had his 3rd straight scoreless appearance, while Tzamtzis (1-0, 0.00) earned his first collegiate win with another strong outing out of the bullpen. Wilson also went 3-4 at the plate and made a sparkling diving catch in left field. Next up for State is a road trip to #7 Clemson (10-1) this weekend for the first conference series of the season. Game times at Doug Kingsmore Stadium are scheduled for Friday at 4:00pm, Saturday at 2:00pm, and Sunday at 1:00pm. Clemson Tigers baseball |
